Mindfulness
Take a deep breath or take short breaths. Smile.
Over reacting or yelling leads to a worse situation.
However, it is hard to control yourself when things seem to be getting out of control! Try some stress relief techniques from the philosophy of Mindfulness works for adults as well as kids.....
Mindfulness Centers
It is beneficial to have Mindfulness Centers in your classroom so students can have a place to go to regroup. Modeling these techniques and implementing them in an on-going manner is key to allowing students the opportunity to:
-have a collection of mindfulness techniques.
-explore a variety of techniques that speak to their learning style.
-be in tune with how their feelings cause their bodies to deal with anger and stress in different ways.
-be in the moment so they can be in control of themselves when they become out of control.
-provide a toolbox of skills that would allow for students to cope with others' actions with rational detachment.
-have a common language, when mindfulness is used school-wide, so as students move from grade to grade, these techniques become life-long tools.
Roll out Mindfulness Centers for students to use and be independent:
1) in a whole group setting, to share and demonstrate what the center is about and how is should be used
2) in a small group setting, to reinforce and again demonstrate, allowing the students to practice, how the center should be used and as well as appropriate behavior
3) as an independent center, to allow students to visit when needed.
