Classroom Organization and Environment
"Reggio Emilia educators stress the need for a classroom environment that informs and engages the child. They consider the physical environment to be "'another teacher.' And in the sense that it can motivate children, enhance learning, and reduce behavior problems, environment really is an extra teacher."
Tips for Organization
1) Make sure there is a place for everything - supplies, papers, resources.
2) Use space wisely for not only storage, but also information.
3) Use wall, door, and window space for organization, information, stations, and displays.
4) Allow for seating that is conducive to varied instructional strategies, seamless transitions, ease of movement, and student discourse.
5) Put the students in charge of classroom jobs in different areas of the room for not only organization and to foster responsibility, but also for time management.
6) Consider efficiency and routines when organizing the structure of the class, such as a "resource center" which fosters organization, independence, and routine.
7) Create an environment that is welcoming and conducive to independence and interactivity.
